People Tree founder Safia Minney about modern slavery in the fashion industry
Amsterdam, June 28, 2017 – Safia Minney, founder and CEO of sustainable fashion label People Tree, will visit the Netherlands. On Sunday April 9 she launches her new book Slave to Fashion at the Soul Salon fashion fair in the Amsterdam ‘Westergasfabriek’. In her book she shines a light on modern slavery in the fashion industry.
The Soul Salon fashion trade show focuses on future trends in fashion and retail. The future of fashion is inseparable from transparency and sustainability. Therefore Safia Minney is a dream guest for the event. Founder of the sustainable label People Tree, creator of the World Fair Trade Day and initiator of the compelling documentary The True Cost, Minney is one of the leading figures in ethical fashion. In April she launched her book Slave to Fashion in the UK; during the Soul Salon event the Netherlands is up. She joins on Sunday July 9 at 10.00 am.
Slavery in the fashion industry
With Slave to Fashion Minney hopes to raise awareness for modern slavery in the fashion industry. For six months she traveled through Bangladesh, Cambodia and India. Some of the most moving interviews were with people who themselves are caught up in slavery and lawyers and activists working to free them. But Minney also interviewed leaders in the anti-slavery movement, trade unions, progressive businesses and tech start-ups to see what is possible and does happen. She therefore hopes that Slave to Fashion provides hope and insights for the future.
Sustainability at Soul Salon
The new Soul Salon trade show is different from existing fashion fairs. With a focus on future trends, the show presents the collections of innovative brands and in addition offers seminars, workshops and experiences. Sustainable and fair trade fashion is fully in line with this futureproof focus. Labels like MYOMY do goods, Miss Green, LangerChen and MUD jeans will present their Spring-Summer ’18 collections. Also Po-Zu, the sustainable footwear brand of which Safia Minney is Managing Director, will be represented with their newest collection.
